Details
Grapefruit, red fruit, and sugar cane. Bright, complex, and beautifully sweet.
Petrona Pérez is an award-recognized Guatemalan specialty coffee grown at Finca Satchibahl, a five-acre, woman-led family farm near Jacaltenango in Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
Grown at 1,800 meters and made entirely from the Bourbon variety, this washed coffee reflects the precision and dedication of producer Petrona Pérez, one of Gento's longtime producer partners.
Her coffee was named a Finalist at the 2025 Global Coffee Awards Origin Competition in the Filter, Washed category, recognizing the exceptional quality of this high-altitude Huehuetenango coffee.
Meet Petrona Pérez
High in the mountains near Jacaltenango, Finca Satchibahl has been producing coffee for more than 20 years.
The farm was established by Petrona's mother and is now led by Petrona, who took responsibility for the family farm at a young age. The name Satchibahl, meaning "the fruit of the tree," reflects the family's deep connection to their land and the coffee they grow.
We first met Petrona more than five years ago at a farmer empowerment workshop. From the first time we tasted her coffee, we were struck by both its quality and her commitment to continually improving it.
Today, Petrona remains one of Gento's closest producer partners.
What makes Petrona Pérez coffee special?
Petrona takes a meticulous, hands-on approach to every harvest.
Coffee cherries are selectively picked at peak ripeness before being hand-pulped and carefully fermented. The coffee is then fully washed and slowly sun-dried on patios.
Each step is designed to preserve the coffee's natural sweetness, balance, and the distinctive character of its high-altitude Huehuetenango origin.
The result is an expressive washed Bourbon that has earned recognition on the international stage.
What does Petrona Pérez coffee taste like?
Petrona Pérez is a bright and complex coffee with notes of grapefruit, red fruit, and sugar cane.
Grapefruit brings lively citrus acidity, while ripe red fruit adds complexity and sugar cane creates a clean, lingering sweetness.
For coffee drinkers who enjoy bright, fruit-forward, high-altitude coffees, Petrona's Bourbon is a beautiful expression of specialty coffee from Huehuetenango.
An Award-Recognized Guatemalan Coffee
Petrona's coffee was selected as a Finalist at the 2025 Global Coffee Awards Origin Competition in the Filter, Washed category.
The competition evaluates coffees through blind tasting by an independent panel of international judges, recognizing quality and consistency across coffees from producing origins around the world.
For us, that recognition celebrates something we've known since we first tasted Petrona's coffee: exceptional quality begins with the producer.
A Long-Term Partnership Built on Quality
Petrona's coffee also represents what can happen when producers have stronger, more stable relationships with buyers.
Through our long-term partnership, Gento purchases Petrona's coffee based on its quality and works to provide stable pricing and premiums that recognize the care behind each harvest.
